Carl Orff Composition Competition 18/19: Themes by Mozart and Orff

Dear composer association,

for the fourth time we can again announce a competition that promises to be particularly attractive for composers. The next Carl Orff Fest, and thus also the composition competition, are under the sign of Carl Orff and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Orff called in his last years of life Mozart as his favorite composer. If one now knows that Carl Orff began his musical career on the church organ of the municipality Unteralting, the rough framework for the next competition can already be found.

The competition 2018-19 is about a piece for organ. There are two musical themes to be processed. On the one hand, the first two bars from the C minor Fantasia (KV 475) by Mozart and, on the other hand, a 9-note chord from “De temporum fine comoedia” by Carl Orff will be included. The length of the piece should be 5-7 minutes. The composition must be playable on a two-manual symphonic organ without expression pedal.

Ten composers will be nominated for the final concert. They receive from Carl Orff Competition e.V. the journey to Munich, two overnight stays sponsored by Fleming Hotel Munich Schwabing, a rehearsal and performance with good organists and an attractive program for two days. Over that the prize money amounts to 5,000 euros for the 1st place, 3,000 euros for the 2nd place and 1,000 euros for the 3rd place.

The deadline for contributions is February 28, 2019. The public voting will begin on March 15, 2019. The world premiere of the final works is planned as part of the Carl Orff Fest in August 2019.
