Short Piece for Two Low Flutes – COLIN McKELLAR

“Short Piece for Two Low Flutes” – performed by Peter Sheridan and Alice Bennett (bass and contrabass flutes)

Program Note

Short Piece for Two Low Flutes is constructed from modal materials derived from a wide influence, particularly within a jazz genre. Nick Dooley’s ephemeral blog of ‘Jazz Tips’ was one important source. The modal materials are used in the two-bar sequences comprising the upper part (on bass flute), while the lower part (contrabass flute) is almost always a single-bar repetition derived from polychords related to the upper-part’s mode. The score includes an addendum of extended techniques used. This piece was composed especially for Peter Sheridan and Alice Bennett.
