Blasts from the Past and Present
present
Paul Goodchild and Susanne Powell
5pm Sunday April 3
Dazzling virtuosity can be heard in the Concert Etude by Russian composer Alexander Goedicke as well as the celebrated Sonatine by Bohuslav Martinu a work that stretches the dynamic boundaries of both the trumpet and piano. Our local composers also get a nod in two pieces by Alan Holley, his beautiful Blue Triangle for Solo Flugelhorn and his unaccompanied trumpet masterpiece Ornithologia written in 2010 are contrasted with a delightful 1920’s cornet solo by Percy Code – At Dawn, which Paul will perform on a cornet that was played at Gallipoli. The beautiful and atmospheric Deep in Summer by Melbourne composer Eve Duncan was especially written for Paul for his Australian and European tours.
The program also features Flugelhorn by the composer of the award winning film, The Piano, Michael Nyman and two French works-Jean Francaix’s Le Gai Paris, a lovely tongue in cheek tribute to that wonderful city and Jean Hubeau’s magnificent three movement Sonata.
